Fall Festivities in Spartanburg

Fall is the perfect time to visit Spartanburg and the Upstate region of South Carolina. The leaf colors are spectacular, the weather is cooler, and there are lots of special activities for families to enjoy. Some of the most popular fall happenings include the Piedmont Interstate Fair, Spartanburg Ghost Tours, and visits to pumpkin patches and corn mazes.

The Piedmont Interstate Fair is one of Spartanburgs premier fall events. Dates for the 2012 fair are October 8-14. Families will enjoy the entertainment, contests, exhibits, and midway rides. Highlights of the week long fair include kids shows, a petting zoo, pony and elephant rides, helicopter rides, a car show, a youth scarecrow contest, and agricultural exhibits. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $5 for children ages 5-11. Mega Pass admissions may be purchased for $20 in advance. Ride tickets are sold separately. The Piedmont Interstate Fair is located at 575 Fairgrounds Road in Spartanburg.

Spartanburg Ghost Tours are given throughout the month of October by Main Street Trolley Tours. The tours take visitors to Spartanburgs most haunted places and are hosted by paranormal experts who will explain the science behind paranormal investigation. Tours leave nightly at 7pm and 8:30pm from Magnolia Train Depot, located at 298 Magnolia Street in downtown Spartanburg. The air conditioned and heated trolleys seat 34 passengers and are replicas of vintage 1920s era trolleys. Tour reservations are required, and visitors should contact the trolley office for current prices.

One of the best pumpkin patches and corn mazes in the area can be found at Strawberry Hill USA. Their fall festivities begin September 22 and run through November 4. Come out to the farm for a day of family fun and get lost in the vast 10-acre Wild West Adventure Corn Maze. Visitors should pick up a game sheet and flag and follow the clues through the twists and turns of the maze. Those that get lost can raise their flag for search and rescue help. Other activities at the farm include hayrides through the pumpkin patch, visits with the farm animals, feeding the ducks, and picking out the perfect Halloween pumpkin in the 20-acre pumpkin patch. Visitors can enjoy breakfast or lunch at the caf and take home a pumpkin pie for dessert. The produce stand offers apples, cider, and seasonal vegetables for purchase. Every Friday and Saturday night visitors can bring a flashlight for a walk through the corn stalks.

Strawberry Hill USA is located at 3097 Hwy 11 in West Chesney, South Carolina. The corn maze is open Monday-Thursday from 9am-7pm, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9am-11pm. Hayrides are offered on Saturdays from 9am-5pm and Sundays from noon to 5pm. Admission for the hayride and maze is $12 and $8 for the hayride only. The maze only is $8 for adults and $6 for children. Admission to Flashlight Nights is $10 for adults and $8 for children.
